The Central Bank of Ukraine on March 9 requested the State Bank of Vietnam and the central banks of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Armenia, and Turkey to stop all transactions with Russia’s Mir card payment system.
AsiaFinancial network reported on March 10, citing the statement of the State Bank of Ukraine asking the central banks of the above countries to stop accepting payment of Mir cards at automatic teller machines and ATMs as well as disable the use of Mir tags.
The request comes at a time of great urgency to intensify global financial pressures on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the statement said.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, on Monday, March 7 spoke about the Israeli airline El Al continuing to accept payments through Russia’s Mir card system. He argued that using Russia’s Mir card payment system is unethical and a blow to Ukraine-Israel relations.
Israeli airline Al El voiced its correction that it banned payments with Russia’s Mir card from February 28.
