Two Japanese warships visit Vietnam’s central port

Two ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force have just docked at Tien Sa port, Danang, starting a three-day visit in the effort of bilateral defense cooperation between Japan and Vietnam.

The fleet of long-distance training ships including the destroyer Inazuma and the training ship Hatakaze, belonging to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), and nearly 480 officers and sailors visited Da Nang on February 24, the Quan Doi Nhan Dan (People’s Army) newspaper reported.

Vietnam’s state-controlled media quoted Colonel II Masaaki, Commander of the 1st training ship unit, as saying that the visit of this long-distance training fleet this time promotes mutual understanding between the Vietnam People’s Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, as well as the Vietnam-Japan bilateral defense cooperation relationship.

During the three-day trip, the Japanese sailors are expected to visit the leaders of Danang city and the Vietnam Navy Region 3 Command via online form.

Japanese diplomats and defense attach in Vietnam were present at the welcoming ceremony on the morning of February 24.

Japan regularly sends warships to Vietnam in the context that the region is facing the growing rise of Chinese forces amid disputes over territorial waters in the South China Sea (Vietnam calls it the East Sea) and the East China Sea.

However, the COVID-19 epidemic has affected foreign warship visits to Vietnam. Thanh Nien News said that this is the first friendship visit of an international ship to Danang city after 2 years of Vietnam’s epidemic prevention and control.

Previously, in November 2021, off Cam Ranh port, Khanh Hoa, corvettes Kaga and Murasame together with 581 officers and sailors of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force coordinated with the Vietnamese Navy to organize a joint maritime exercise.

In related developments, on February 25, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force said that it had just conducted a bilateral exercise with a group of US naval ships including USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Mobile Bay, USS Spruance in the vicinity of the Okinawa Sea in order to strengthen the capacity of the Japan-US Alliance for effective deterrence and countermeasures.
