Compared to the world, the cancer incidence in Vietnam is at an alarming rate (up 9 ranks) according to the data announced by the Vietnam Cancer Society at the annual Scientific Conference on Cancer Prevention and Control in Thua Thien-Hue.
On December 23 and 24, in Hue City, the 9th Annual Scientific Conference on Cancer Control took place, with two forms, face-to-face and online, organized by Hue Central Hospital and University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue University). The conference published updated data showing that the rate of cancer in Vietnam has increased to an alarming level, 9 places compared to the world.
The conference received 88 scientific reports on cancer treatment and prevention, as well as outstanding developments in research and the application of science and technology to improve the quality of cancer treatment. There are 10 reports of foreign experts (from the US, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan) on the world’s latest research, methods, and techniques of cancer treatment.

Within the framework of the conference, there is a multi-disciplinary Cancer Management Course (MCMC) training program with topics on Breast – Gynecological Cancer, Pediatric Oncology, and Palliative Care for cancer patients.
Cancer rates are increasing at an alarming rate
The report cited at the conference, citing updated data from Global Cancer Observatory, Globocan – 2020, said that by 2020 in Vietnam, the new incidence rate has increased 9 places (ranked 90/185 country) and the cancer death rate increased 6 places (ranked 50/185 countries) compared to 2018.
Currently, there are more than 350,000 patients living with cancer nationwide. Particularly at Hue Central Hospital, statistics also show that the number of cancer patients entering the Cancer Center for treatment increases year by year, an increase of 30-45%.
At the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, due to the influence of the Covid-19 epidemic, the number of patients coming for cancer examination and treatment decreased slightly, but recently the number of hospitalized patients has increased again. Cancer incidence in Vietnam is increasing at an alarming rate and the most common cancers are still lung, liver, colorectal, breast, stomach, head, and neck cancers.
